who we are

talen is run by Fatih Şen, a private individual in türkiye ("we", "us"), who is responsible for your personal data as its controller. this policy explains what personal data the talen app and gettalen.com collect, why, and what you can do about it. questions go to [email protected].

what we collect

we only collect what we need to run talen and keep it safe:

• account: when you sign in with apple or google, an account identifier and the email address, name and profile photo the provider shares with us.
• profile: your name, date of birth (others see your age, never the date), country, languages and levels, interests, and a photo if you add one.
• conversations: the messages, photos and group posts you send, so we can deliver them. voice calls are connected through our servers; we do not record them.
• safety: reports and blocks you make or receive, the results of our reviews, and what our automatic filter flags as profanity, sexual content or spam.
• premium: if you subscribe, the app store tells us whether your subscription is active. we never see your card details.
• device and use: app version, device type, language setting, crash reports, a notification token, and when you were last active.
• the website: gettalen.com uses no analytics or advertising cookies. our hosting keeps standard server logs, such as ip addresses and the pages requested, for security.

how we use it

we use your data to:

• create your account and show your profile to other people on talen.
• suggest partners whose languages complement yours, close to your age, with shared interests and recent activity.
• deliver messages and calls, and run groups.
• keep talen safe: filter abusive content, review reports, check that everyone is 18 or older, and act on accounts that break the rules.
• provide premium features while your subscription is active.
• send reminders and notifications, which you can turn off at any time.
• answer your support requests and meet our legal obligations.

our legal reasons

we process your data because we need it to provide the service you signed up for, because we have a legitimate interest in keeping talen safe and secure, because the law requires it, or because you gave your consent, for example to notifications or an optional photo. you can withdraw consent at any time.

who can see what

other people on talen see your profile. the people you talk to see your messages, and group members see what you post in that group. premium members can see that you viewed their profile.

service providers that host our servers, deliver notifications, handle sign-in and process app store payments work with your data only on our behalf and under contract. we share data with authorities only when the law requires it.

we do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.

where your data is stored

our servers are in germany, in the european union. if you use talen from türkiye or another country outside the european union, your data is transferred to germany so we can run the service.

the data on our servers stays in the european union: our hosting provider in germany processes it under a data processing agreement under article 28 of the gdpr, only on our instructions and with security measures that are audited every year.

how long we keep it

we keep your data while your account is open. when you delete your account, you have 30 days to change your mind; after that we delete your profile, messages and other personal data. we keep records about safety reports and enforcement, and data the law requires us to keep, only as long as needed for those purposes.

your rights

you can export your data and delete your account from inside the app. you can also ask us to show you, correct or restrict the data we hold about you, or object to how we use it, by writing to us.

depending on where you live, laws such as the eu general data protection regulation and türkiye's personal data protection law (kvkk) give you these rights, and you can complain to your data protection authority. write to [email protected] and we will answer within 30 days.

age limit

talen is only for people aged 18 or older. if we learn that someone under 18 is using talen, we close the account and delete its data.

security

data travels encrypted between your device and our servers, sessions can be revoked at once, and only the people who run talen can reach our systems. no system is perfectly secure, so please tell us right away if you notice anything wrong.

changes to this policy

when we change this policy, we update the date at the top. if a change matters for how we use your data, we tell you in the app before it applies.
